This is a fanfiction Christmas I wrote a year ago for a contest, I hope you like it ^__^
And Merry Christmas!
- What am I, a porter? The delivery boy? I’m an elf, damn. I make toys! I’m not Santa’s deliverer! How could he choose me?! An electronics operator, the best, in addition! - he went on complaining, while he let the presents drop at the bottom of the children beds, in the dormitory of that orphanage.
That year Santa entrusted some elves with the task of delivering the presents to the orphanages, and being chosen was something to be proud of. Santa ad chosen the best, but apparently Kazunari, the electronics and videogames operator, took it badly. He thought that was a punishment, instead of a sign of trust.
- But as soon as I’ll be back at North Pole, I’ll give that fatty a piece of my mind! I haven’t got the slightest intention to be his delivery boy again!- he said.
He couldn’t make any mistakes in delivering the presents, ‘cause, like Santa, he knew the names of all the children and the presents they asked.
- This stuffed dog?- he wondered, taking the puppet out of the bag, - Ah yes! For you.- he said, putting it next to a child, who was sleeping holding his pillow tight.
He put his hand in the bag again and took a big book out of it.
- And this huge book?- he wondered opening his eyes wide, - You didn’t say that, rather than a book, you wanted a kind of encyclopedia! That’s why this bag was so heavy! My poor back.- he whined, massaging it, - I’m 400 years old, damn!- he scolded him, putting the book at the foot of the bed.
He moved to the next bed, which was full of sketch papers and the young boy sleeping in it was still holding a crayon in his hand.
- These are for you- he said, putting a paint box on the bed.
He put his hand in the bag again, and took out a nice purple sweater, with a little panda on it.
- What kind of weird boy doesn’t ask for a toy, but just for a simple sweater? These are the kinds of presents that old aunts do…- he said to himself while laying the present near the bed.
- I like my present- a sleepy boy said suddenly, he was sitting on his bed rubbing his eyes.
The elf jumped, taken aback.
- Are you Santa?- the dark boy said, while looking at him with his eyes full of gratitude, holding his gift in his hands.
- Do I look fat and with beard?!- the elf protested, - sleep, or I’ll take you your present away!- he menaced.
- Who are you, then?- he asked, not frightened at all by the menace.
- I’m an elf, but sleep now!- he answered.
- Why is it you bringing the presents, and not Santa?- the boy asked again.
- Because he’s old and he needs a little help.- he explained.
- Hmm- the boy nodded.
- Go back to sleep now, Jun- he repeated.
- How do you know my name?- Jun asked.
- I know the names of all the children, or I couldn’t work with Santa- the elf answered.
- And what’s your name?- Jun asked.
- Kazunari, but you can call me Nino- he answered, - But, go back to your bed and sleep, now.- he said, making him lay in the bed and tucking him up, surprising even himself, because he was not prone to be a kind person, but he had strangely taken that boy to his bosom. So, since that night, every year he went back to that orphanage to bring the presents to the children, in order just to see the little Jun again.
Although Santa often told the elf that he was not obliged to go, in view of the clamorous complaints he made the first time he had been entrusted. But, surprisingly, he refused. By then he unexpectedly had grown fond of that child, so, every year, he used to go back to bring the presents to that orphanage, and he always found Jun waiting for him, to ask him some questions. And every year the child used to ask strange things as a gift… shoes, a coat, and the more he grew up, the more demanding his requests were.
Someday, however, the elf found him in tears, because some child had told him that Santa did not exist and that he was a liar, because he said that every year he used to talk to one of Santa’s elves.
Nino asked him to tell who that child was, and that morning, in addition to waking up finding no presents, he found out that somebody had written all over his face and that his bed was wet, so that the other children made fun of him for a long time, and he stopped being arrogant.
However, as soon as he got back home, he got scolded by Santa for what he had done, because he shouldn’t interfere in the children business. But the elf didn’t regret at all what he had done, and if anybody bothered Jun again, making him cry, he would not hesitate to teach him a lesson again.
Years went by and Nino saw Jun growing up year by year, he saw how happily he used to wait for that night of the year when they would meet, and now also the elf was living 346 days waiting.
His fellow elves went on telling him that it was wrong, that he should have no preference among the children.
- He will soon be too old for you to still bring him presents- Subaru, the elf in charge of music and instruments division, said one night.
- Don’t be mean, Baru! I think there’s nothing wrong if Kazu-chan loves that child in a special way.- the elf Yasu, in charge of the toys design, said instead.
- I don’t love him in a special way, I just find him nice.- the elf tried to deny, but his friends looked at him unconvinced. After all I could deny the obvious, but in the end he clearly knew that Jun was special to him, and he was more special year after year.
One Christmas night he found him in tears again, he was big now, and he didn’t think it would happen again. He was ready to disobey Santa’s orders to help Jun, but when he asked him what had happened…
- Ma-chan is going away tomorrow, he’s too old to stay here! I knew it would happen, also Toshi and Sho went away, but now I’ll be alone.- the boy said.
Nino had seen him growing up and becoming stronger and stronger, confident in his choices, but actually he was a very sweet and sensitive boy, who felt alone and scared.
- You can meet them again, right.- Nino said.
- Yes, I know. But, I’m wondering what I’ll be doing when I’ll be out of here, I’ll have to go away from here in a few months, after all.
Nino probably realized in that moment that the child he met years before, was now almost an adult, he was not the little Jun anymore, with all his questions, he had grown up, and he would soon face the real world, and next year he wouldn't find him in that place anymore.
Weeks went by since that night and he couldn’t help thinking about it, he should’ve told Jun that they couldn’t meet the following Christmas night, but his courage failed him.
- Kazunari, does anything trouble you?- suddenly the deep voice of Santa said, giving him a start of surprise. But he couldn't be wrong, Santa was the only one calling him by name.
- No, I’m well!- he said, starting to press the keys on his computer quickly, and going back to the programming of the new game he devised.
- Is it about the little Jun, maybe?- he asked again.
- He’s not the little Jun anymore- he answered coldly carrying on his work.
- I see…- he said then, going away.
It was Christmas Eve and Nino wanted to tell Santa that he didn’t fell like delivering the presents that year, after all it didn’t make any sense for him anymore, he wouldn’t find Jun, and he wasn’t allowed to go to any place but those he was told to.
- Kazunari, can I talk to you to recap tonight’s assignment?- Santa asked the elf. It was time to tell him he didn’t want to go and to entrust somebody else.
- Actually, tonight I’d rather not g…-
- Here you are!- Santa broke in, putting a little square box in his hands.
- What is this?-
- The present for Jun- the man answered.
- But Jun…-
- Kazunari, this is the last time you can meet him, do what you think is best and make a choice, you too.- he simply said, then he went back to his hectic job.
He heard the door open, at first he didn’t know what to do, he jumped to his feet, unsure whether to hide or not, but when the light turned on and he saw Jun in front of him, everything changed suddenly. He looked surprised to see him, as if he didn't expect to see him. Then he suddenly smiled, with the most awesome smile Nino had ever seen. He was beautiful, and he had become even more during that year.
- Tadaima- he said, taking his shoes off.
- You took a long time! Do you think I’m here to lose my time?- he burst out, pretending to be fed up by the wait, which was endless, but source of counsel.
- Sorry, I had night shift at work.- he answered taking his jacket off. –Do you want some tea?- he asked, heading to the kitchen to put the water on, and warm himself up with something hot.
- I didn’t think I would see you again, I feared you wouldn’t show up anymore- he said again, while Nino went on staying silent and observing him, he had changed a lot.
- I shouldn’t have come, indeed. This is the last time, and… Santa told me to give you this.- he said, handing him the box.
- A present? For me?- he asked, a little surprised, then he took it from Nino’s hands and started unwrapping it. Now that he was so near, he could see how much he had grown up. He was now taller than himself, he was not a child anymore.
- It’s beautiful!- Jun exclaimed, and Nino looked at the present for the first time. It was a snow globe, a classic and trivial present, were it not for it being rather particular in the inside, where there was a little scale model of Santa’s house at the North Pole. All the elves had that globe, because it was something very important to them. – Please, say thank you to him, it’s really beautiful, I’ll treasure it.- Jun said.
- It’s impossible. Then, this is what he meant… Why should I take this decision? It’s unfair! Did you get it, old man? IT’S UNFAIR!!!- he screamed looking up.
- Nino, do you feel ok?- Jun asked confused.
- I’m well, yes.- he answered irritated.
- You’re an elderly man, don’t fuss too much. You can have an heart attack.- Jun said, making fun of him.
- I’m only a little over 400 years old, I’m still young!- he objected soundly.
- You don’t look like you age, for sure. You look 15.- Jun said.
- I liked you better when you used to swamp me up with questions- Nino muttered, pretending to be offended.
Some minutes of silence followed, while Jun went to turn off the stove, where the kettle had started hissing.
- Is this really the last time we meet?- Jun asked suddenly, still having his back to him.
- Yes, you see, Jun, I cannot come back again, you’re not a child anymore.- The elf explained.
- You don’t know how much I feared this day would come. I was afraid that you wouldn't come anymore, that you would leave me alone, too, that…- he stopped because he couldn’t go on. Then Nino went closer and made him turn.
Jun was crying, and for the first time it was him who made him cry. He had promised himself that if anybody made him cry again, he would stand up for him going against the rules. That was the moment, when he took his decision, and after wiping away the tears going down Jun’s left cheek, he closed his eyes and put his lips against the boy’s. It was a soft and warm contact, sweet and delicate, a magical touch. But the magic would work only if also Jun’s desire corresponded to his own. Then he suddenly felt a brisk cold on his skin and he step back. Everything around him was white, the stars were still shining in the sky, even if the horizon was clearing in the distance.
On his side, Jun was looking around in confusion.
- You look good with your pointed ears, you know?- Nino said suddenly.
- What?!- he almost shouted, starting touching his ears.
- Come, I’ll introduce you my friends.- he said happily taking Jun’s hand, heading to the big house in front of them.
Now they would really be together forever, there wouldn’t be any more goodbyes, and most of all, Jun would never feel alone anymore, because now he had found his family.
